Jordie and Kelsey – pursuing exceptional research experiences abroad

Congratulations Jordie Fischer and Kelsey Cochrane in obtaining a Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (MSFSS) to travel abroad and expand their research training!

The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) Program supports high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian and foreign institutions. This program provides a $6,000 travel award.

Jordie – “I am excited to use the MSFSS funds to support my living and researching in Cambodia, in both the capital city where our partner NGO, Helen Keller International is based, and in the rural province, where I am conducting my thesis research. I look forward to continuing to expand my global health experiences as well as learn more about wet lab analyses, such as being trained on a Sysmex hematology analyzer  and extraction to a CALEX® Cap containing a medium for gut inflammation analyses, as we are collecting and analyzing 960 stool, fecal swab and blood samples.”

Kelsey – “I will be traveling to Adelaide, Australia with my MSFSS award. I will be working at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute in the lab of Dr. Tim Green. I will receive lab training on the conduct of the microbiological assay – the gold standard of folate analysis. I will be analyzing samples from my clinical trial: natural folate vs synthetic folic acid in pregnancy.”

Congrats both! and safe travels!
