What a phenomenal way to end the term!

What a phenomenal way to end our FNH 455 course (Applied International Nutrition) in UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems this year: with the celebration of our inaugural Compete for Change challenge with the incredible Food for Famine Society!

Our class of 43 students competed in groups to win their selected NGOs a total of $100,000 in operational funding (stay tuned for our forthcoming announcement of the winning NGOs)!! Further, 11 students from the top three winning groups won the inaugural Food for Famine Society Prize in Global Nutrition, including a cash prize of $2,500 and official award recognition on their transcripts!

To my 455 students: You took on the immense challenge of addressing malnutrition in the world’s most vulnerable regions. Your remarkable work over the course of the term was inspiring, and showcased your empathy, academic rigor, and commitment of global responsibility! 🏆

To the judges: thank you for sharing your expertise, insights, and time to bring thoughtful engagement and critical discourse to this project – it made the experience so much more meaningful to our students. Kristina Michaux, Shruthi Cyriac, Colleen Farrell, Stella Mapemba Mlewa & Cassi Sauer! and to my long standing 455 collaborator and contributor Allison Daniel – you are all amazing! ⭐️

And, last but certainly not least, to Maria Martini & Leah Chevallier, and the family and board members of the Food for Famine Society – thank you for your incredible generosity and partnership, and your solid belief in this project and in our students. We continue to be in awe of the incredible work you do around the globe. It is a pleasure and an honor to work with you! 🙏🏻

This would also not be possible without the support from: David Kitts, Zoë Campbell & Heather McCaw

The Compete for Change challenge was truly a celebration of ideas, partnership, generosity and hope! ✨👏🏻
